HapKiDo training is mental as well as physical. In addition to techniques for self-defense, the art also helps build self-control, discipline, and respect. These disciplines are taught to the students by following traditional HapKiDo behavior while in the dojang...
Etiquette:
- Students and instructors should bow at the beginning and end of each class to show respect to the instructor staff, the dojang, and for each other.
- When a ranking Black Belt enters the dojang, the highest ranking person on the training floor should call the class to attention and bow to the ranking belt.
- Bow to the flags as you enter and leave the dojang.
- After you have been dismissed from the class, bow to your instructor before leaving the dojang.
Conduct:
- No horse play in the dojang.
- No unnecessary talking during class.
- No touching of weapons or other equipment unless you have been given permission by the instructor.
- No sparring without the supervision of a Black Belt.
- Listen carefully to your instructor to prevent wasting productive class time.
- Do not leave the mat for a drink or restroom break during training without asking permission.
- Address Black Belts and instructors by using Mr./Ms. and the instructor's name, or by the use of "Sir/Ma'am" or "Sa Bum Nim."
- Never correct an instructor. If you have been told more than one way to perform a technique, perform the technique the way the present instructor has told you. You may contact a higher ranked instructor after your class to clarify the situation.
- When seated on the mat, backs should be straight and legs should be crossed. Please do not lean against the wall.
- No lounging in the dojang. Students should project a positive image of our school whether you are training or waiting for class to begin.
- No food, drinks, or chewing gum in the dojang.
- Please pay your dues on time. Your cooperation in this area is one very important way you can contribute to the smooth operation of our school.
- If you are late for class, please bow in with the present instructor before beginning training.
Appearance and Personal Hygiene:
- Please do not wear jewelry during training. This is for the safety of all students, not just the one wearing the jewelry.
- Please do not wear footwear on the training floor. Place them neatly along the wall of the dressing room or in the bins provided in the viewing area.
- Students with long hair should pull hair back away from face and eyes.
- Students with open cuts or abrasions must wear protection over the area to prevent infection and the spread of germs.
Care of the Uniform (Do Bok):
- Wash your uniform after each class, but never wash your belt.
- Never let your belt lay or drag on the floor.
- Keep your do bok in good shape, with all patches sewn on properly and all holes or tears repaired before each class.
- Your do bok should be properly folded or hung when not being worn. If you do not know the proper way to fold your do bok, ask your instructor for assistance.
